Gerry Claude, a life long resident of Metairie, proudly shows off her First Place for the "under glass" painting, Old Blacksmith Shop, during the Lakeside Art Show sponsored by the Metairie Art Guild currently at the Mall. Calling Gerry a life long resident, is exactly right. "I was born, raised and lived in Metairie my entire life," said Gerry. "Not many people can say that. In fact, I live in the same house I lived in when I was a year old." Gerry Claude's interest in art started as a child in Metairie. She attended East Jefferson High School where she drew cartoons for the school paper. After graduating, she sent a letter to Walt Disney with samples of her work. To her surprise he wrote back recommending several art schools. She received her formal art training from the Richmond Professional Institute, the College of William and Mary. Returning to Metairie, she however married and became involved in day to day activity of raising a family and a job with the postal service. She worked for "28 years at the Metairie Road Post Office selling stamps." She said, "I can hardly go anywhere in Metairie without someone recognizing me." A career in art seemed lost but not forgotten. However, when she retired from the post office, she vowed to return to her first love by dedicating herself to being a full time professional artist. She has received over 100 awards for her paintings and has been accepted in many juried exhibitions. One of her favorite honors was her drawing of a tree exhibited in the New Orleans Museum of Art. She is the past president of the Metairie Art Guild and the New Orleans Art Association. A Times Picayune art critic called her paintings "positive" and "creative." Gerry creates unique pen & ink and watercolor renditions of historical New Orleans Architecture and life in and around the Crescent City. Her works all have a local flavor from flooded Katrina houses to Schwegman shopping bags to old K&B signs. Ms Claude strives for self-expression with the use of details and realism. All of her work is original and she has a waiting list of commissions to draw or paint homes, pets and other favorite subjects.
